Why Autumn is a Great Time to Install Solar
With plenty of warm, sunny weather still to come, autumn is a great time to install a solar PV system on your roof. To find out why, read on.
1) Great weather
While in another country or continent we might recommend not installing panels in autumn, thanks to our high rate of sunny, clear days, this is not the case for most parts of Australia, in particular WA and Queensland.
Perth 2019:
Month | Hours of Sunlight (Mean) | Number of days with rain above 1mm | Min Temp (Mean) | Max Temp (Mean) |
March | 12.4 | 2 | 17.3°C | 30.1°C |
April | 11.3 | 5 | 13°C | 25.6°C |
May | 10.4 | 4 | 8.7°C | 22.2°C |
Autumn in Perth brings with it long days, little rain, and balmy weather, creating the perfect conditions for solar generation.
Brisbane 2019:
Month | Hours of Sunlight (Mean) | Number of days with rain above 1mm | Min Temp (Mean) | Max Temp (Mean) |
March | 12.3 | 14 | 21.5°C | 31.2°C |
April | 11.5 | 8 | 17.9°C | 26.9°C |
May | 10.7 | 7 | 14.3°C | 24.9°C |
Brisbane remains sunny in Autumn, with long daylight hours and relatively little rain.
Contrary to popular belief, panels do not work better when the weather is extremely warm, in fact, some productions can suffer under extremely hot days (35 degrees +). With an average maximum temperature of around 25°C for Perth and 28°C for Brisbane, autumn is the perfect season for solar generation, and thus installation.
2) Get ready for winter
Installing in autumn also means you’ll have your solar PV system set up in time to offset high electricity bills associated with increased heater/air-conditioning usage in winter.
With winter in Australia still producing a high number of sunny, clear days, your system will still be generating a considerable amount to help offset your bills.
3) Beat the spring/summer rush
Spring and summer are traditionally a solar provider’s busiest time of year, and can lead to wait times of around four or six weeks for installation.
Installing your solar PV system in autumn can drastically reduce wait times, meaning you start saving on your electricity bills sooner, and are ready for the warmer months as soon as spring and summer arrive.
The Bottom Line
While autumn may not be as hot as summer or as sunny as spring, the season’s reduced temperatures are actually a bonus for a solar PV system’s generation.
Plus, due to the phase out of government incentives, otherwise known at STCs, scheduled for January 1 every year, we recommend you install solar as soon as possible (or at least before the following year) in order to secure the current STC incentives and maximise your savings.
